CIX data centre fire suppression

The fire suppression system in CIX is based on Nitrogen.
The other main alternative gas used in fire suppression systems for data centres is FM200 (aka 1,1,1,2,3,3,3-Heptafluoropropane). However, we decided against FM200 because it is expensive to refill, has to be sourced outside Ireland and its global warming potential is quite high.
Nitrogen, on the other hand, is an inert gas which is equally effective, readily available and constitutes over 78% of the air we breath!
The gas bottles in our fire suppression system (above) each hold 36.7 cubic metres of Nitrogen at 300 bar pressure and can empty into our data centre floor in under a minute.

Could you tell me who installed your nitrogen system? I would like to contact them.
Thank you.

Having had to get an FM200 system recharged recently (after human error), I can confirm that not only is it expensive, but it takes ages to achieve the recharge as well.
I naively thought that these big Fire Companies had stock on hand- they don’t.
Our other site uses Inergen and it is a third party site anyway but I have asked the qwuestion about turnaround times.
Great blog, you have a smart facility there.

Hi SHADES,
You are correct, most companies don’t stock the agent to refill your systems. However, with INERGEN, we at Tyco Fire, Dublin do carry stock for our customers with a maintenance contract in place. We usually have our customers back up and running within 24 Hours. The problem with FM200 is that each site has its own fill level, so its impossible to hold stock of a cylinder for every different site in the country. We recommend that customers carry a reserve cylinder of FM200, which we can supply. INERGEN cylinders are standard size for all site, wit 150bar, 200bar & 300bar cylinders available, depending on your system.
We believe we may be the only company to carry stock to support our clients, and are 100% sure of this when it comes to INERGEN.
Hope this is of help!
Kind Regards
Keith
